Isla Holbox: An Undiscovered Fly Fishing Gem
I’m writing this post sitting in some lounge furniture in the early morning light at the Isla Holbox Fly Fishing Lodge on the Gulf of Mexico. When I was originally planning my trip down to Mexico I was set on heading south out of Cancun to the legendary Bonefish and Permit waters of Ascencion Bay but had a change of plans at the last minute when I was asked to go to a little Island to the north called Isla Holbox to shoot some photos. I had little chance to research the place before I left and just hoped for the best. What I discovered is one of the true gems of saltwater fly fishing.
It’s all about the Tarpon here and there are plenty of them, willing to take a fly and put up a fight that rivals any fish in the world. I’m here in the off-season, the Giant Tarpon cruise these waters between May and September, so I’m taken to the lagoons and river channels for “baby” Tarpon and Snook. We have been seeing schools of Tarpon around every corner varying in size from 3 pounds to 10 pounds. The water boils with Tarpon rolling at the surface, creating a frenzy that sends shivers down my spine. Having even a baby on the line is one of the most invigorating and exciting moments that you can have pursuing this sport. The people here are just as warm as the weather, adding to the feeling that you have discovered your own little piece of paradise.
I will be posting more from Mexico if I can find internet service along the way, Adios.
Learn the fly fishing secrets that will take your game to a whole new level!
